Mary Elizabeth Will was born in 1906 in North Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the eldest of the two children of George Frederick Will and Margaret Anna Schwan. She was living with her parents and her Schwan grandparents in 1910 in Allegheny County. By 1920, she and her family were living in Stonewall, Shenandoah County, Virginia.

Mary graduated in 1928 from the State Teachers' College in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She taught school in Maryland from 1928 to 1935, and in 1930, she was living in Pocomoke City, Worcester County, Maryland.

Mary married William Edward Bratten, Jr. (1904- ) in 1935 in Washington, DC.

By 1940, the family was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where William, Jr. was working as an insurance adjuster. By 1948, the family was living at 418 Glenwood Avenue, Haddonfield, Camden County, New Jersey.

William, Jr. died in 1974. In the early 1980s, Mary is listed as a widow when she sells the property at 418 Glenwood Avenue.
