Husband of Maggie (Green) Patillo. He was survived by his wife, a daughter, and a son. The name is sometimes spelled Pattillo, but Solomon and his son Samuel spelled it with one "t" on their own draft cards. The 1910 census gives three children of Solomon and Maggie: daughters Ora and Elsie, and son Samuel. His newspaper obituary lists one daughter as surviving. If this is accurate, it would be Elsie, who was Elsie Davis when she died in 1992.

Solomon was born into slavery. His father was Thomas Smith, but when he was bought by John Pattillo, he changed his last name. Solomon's mother was Fannie Smith. Thomas died about 1885. Fannie died in 1909. The story is documented in "Interviews With Former Slaves 1936-1938," pages 292-296.
