Irish Artist. An impressionist and post-Impressionism landscape and portrait painter, he is best remembered for his documentary depictions of late 19th century working class life in Ireland. The son of an artist, he studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, Belgium where he won the Tayloy Prize in 1881 and 1882. In 1886, he was elected to the Royal Hibernian Academy and received many commissions for portraits. He returned to Ireland in 1892 to live in the family residence and devoted much of time painting outdoors scenes. Among his notable works include "A Grey Morning in a Breton Farmyard" (before 1884), "A New Arrival" (1885), "Dublin Streets: A Vendor of Books" (1889), "In a Dublin Park, Light and Shade" (1895), "A Backstreet in the Snow" (1895), and "Summertime" (1901). He died of pneumonia at the age of 43.
