Hattiesburg, MS – On Sunday, May 13, 2018, Jewel Maye McPhail Luquet was called home to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior after a long bout with cancer. She was surrounded by family, who were in constant vigil at her side, at Asbury Hospice House. The family took great comfort in knowing she would finally be spending Mother’s Day again with her mother and celebrating her homecoming with her mother, father, husband and numerous relatives and friends who went to Heaven before her.
Maye was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi and at two years her family moved to Bonhomie in Hattiesburg, MS. She had many fabulous stories about Bonhomie when she was young. She lived in Hattiesburg, Mississippi her entire life. She lived in the Dixie Community where she raised her children and she and her husband worked together to build their home. They were a remarkable team and often worked together remodeling, going to record shows or selling records/albums on Ebay.
Maye was known for her cooking skills and any time someone walked in the door she was going to throw a meal together and feed them. She also was an amazing piano player and played the piano for Ridgecrest Baptist Church and for Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Everybody felt at home and felt the love at Maye’s house. She was an amazing mother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, confidant, and many times a counselor to those she loved.
She made everyone feel special as she always had a compliment to make you smile, whether it be that your hair was beautiful, or your eyes were the perfect color. She could win someone’s heart over in a minute, and throughout her illness it was obvious as she won many doctors, nurses, assistants, or anyone who came in contact with her, over and they felt a closeness to her they may not feel with just anybody.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew A. Luquet, Jr. and her parents, Paul, Sr. and Jewel McPhail.
She is survived by three sons, Robin K. Luquet of Hattiesburg, Andrew A. Luquet, III of Ocean Springs, MS and Paul A. Luquet (Tracy) of D’Iberville, MS; one daughter, Julie C. Lee (Edward) of Hattiesburg; three sisters, Billie Swinney of Hattiesburg, Peggy Hogan of Longview, TX, and Julia Fay Berry of Hattiesburg; two brothers, Paul McPhail, Jr. of Madisonville, LA and Jimmy McPhail of Ocala, FL; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
