Lance Cpl. Scherry of Rocky River, Ohio, played both offense and defense for the Rocky River Pirates football team where he was a standout player. He won the school's 'Heart of a Teammate' award, which recognizes excellence on the football field and respect from coaches and players. He gave everything all the time because that's just who Dan was. But his last goal line was not just a hundred yards away. It was all the way across the world. He was focused on an objective. And his objective was, as it had been throughout his entire career at Rocky River High School, was being a marine. Before joining the Marines, Dan graduated from the Fire Training Academy at Cuyahoga Community College. He joined the Marine Corps in April 2006 and was trained as an infantry mortar man. After a year of boot camp, he was deployed to Iraq. But before he left, he stopped in at his alma mater, imparting wisdom to his former teammates. As they were about to go in to lift weights, he went to talk to them. 'Go in there and do the best job you can, and don't do anything half way, do it to your full potential.' He is the son of Robert J. and Marianne LaSalvia Scherry. Beloved grandson of Virginia and the late Joseph Scherry and David and Barbara LaSalvia. He was 20.
