Born to John Martin and Helen Marr Rutledge Wood. Wallace's father died at the battle of Atlanta, Georgia, during the Civil War, and his mother later remarried Henry Horn Fort. On December 31, 1884 Wallace married Mary Thomasson in Robinson, McClennan Co., Texas. When they first arrived in Dilley in 1890, Wallace and Mary owned and operated Wood Hotel, then Wallace later became a farmer in Frio County, Texas. They had the following children: Rena Lee, Helen Rutledge, Mattie Florence, Susie Aileen, Nannie May, Clarence Nelson, Blanche Erma and Claude Wallace Wood. Wallace and Mary were charter members of the First Baptist Church of Dilley, Texas.
