Born to Elias Joseph and Louisa Montgomery Hannum Fort. During the Civil War he was a member of company G, 3rd Ky. Cavalry. He was captured and spent over eighteen months at Camp Douglas, Illinois, as a prisoner of war. He married Helen Marr Rutledge Wood, a widow with one son, on October 15, 1867, in Brick Church, Giles Co., Tennessee, and made their home in Robertson County, Tennessee, until they moved to McClennan County, Texas sometime in 1870. Sometime about 1890, they moved to Frio County, Texas. Henry and Helen had the following children: Susan, Penelope and Emily Langley Fort. After Helen's death, he married again about 1897 to Mrs. Lucretia Whitley. He was a farmer for most of his life.
