She was the daughter of John Boles and Mary Elizabeth McCullough Goff Rutledge. She married John Martin Wood December 18, 1860 in Giles Co., Tennessee and had one child, Wallace Rutledge Wood. John was a member of Company I of the 53rd Tennessee Infantry, and was a prisoner of war at Camp Morton, Indiana. After John was released from prison, he was fatally wounded during the battle at Atlanta, Georgia in 1864.

On October 15, 1867 Helen married Henry Horn Fort. She and Henry had the following children: Susan, Penelope and Emily Langley Fort. Henry and Helen lived in Robertson County, Tennessee, until sometime in 1870 when they moved to McClennan County, Texas. About 1890, they moved to Frio County, Texas.

Helen is buried in Block 6, Lot 8 of the Pearsall Cemetery.
