MR. CONWAY'S STORY

BURYING A PAUPER

Many citizens of McCurtain County are unfamiliar with the work and methods used in the burial of those who died without any means of providing for their burial. A case which occurred in our own county this week should not pass by un-noticed.

The writer late Saturday afternoon found an old man, aged 92 years, who had been left near the courthouse. He was sick and was just able to move on crutches. He was taken into the sheriff's office. Arrangements were made to provide him with food, medical attention and clothing, and the sheriff's force endeavered to place him with relatives. Failing in this, he was taken care of in the room adjoining the sheriff's office.

During Sunday night he died, and his body was taken to Coffey Funeral Home to be prepared for burial, as is customary in such cases. The county commissioner's provoded for burial. Sunday night at about 7:30 p. m. the Coffey Funeral Home called upon the writer to accompany them to the Denison cemetery to conduct the last rites over this aged man.

On arriving at the cemetery, the casket was opened, and there by the rays of a automobile headlights, we saw the man nobody wanted, dressed in a splendid navy blue suit lying in a casket that anyone would be proud of.

The burial was conducted in a respectful and reverent manner, and so Hiram T. Conway, aged 92, whom nobody wanted in life, was tenderly laid to rest. The highest kind of praise is due to the sheriff's forces, the county commissioners, through Newt Derryberry, and the Coffey Funeral Home, and Mrs. Marguerite Womack of the F. E. R. A. through whose efforts this man was laid to rest.
