Ira Clay Holsapple grew up in Kentucky and left home to join the military at age 18. For many years his family did not know where he was. He married Ethel Moore, who died in 1934, from tuberculosis. He then married Louisa Bristol and the couple had five children: Judith Ann, John Clay, Henry Herman, Julia Mae, and Herbert Louis.
