Ward was the son of Francis A. and Mary Coleman Maust. His brothers included Donald A, Dwight, Robert and Eugene Maust. He was father of Ronald Maust. He and his brothers Donald and Dwight opened Maust Brothers Trucking Company which moved freight through Western and Central Pennsylvania. They hauled fertilizer, house coal, and livestock feed. In the 1960's, the brothers landed a lucrative contract to carry liquid sugar from Baltimore, Maryland to Johnstown, Pennsylvania for a local ice cream factory. Ward preferred to handle this run himself. He was also very particular about the cleanliness of the bay where he parked his truck each night--it had to be swept each day.
