Father of Mr. Joe Ford Buried at Old Home
The funeral of Mr. J J Ford, father of Mr. Joe Ford, Sr., prominent attorney of Houston, was held last Friday at the old family cemetery at Gaston Springs.
Mr. Ford, who was 82 years of age, died at the home of a son, Mr. John Ford, in Lonoke, Ark., after an illness of several days. He was born in Fayette, Ala., but came to Mississippi a number of years ago, locating in Calhoun County, where he spent the greater part of his life.
He was twice married, first to Miss Martha Wade, in 1873, to which union six children were born, and later to Mrs. Zoo Chandler, who also died a number of years ago. His father responded to the call of the confederacy, and was killed in his first battle, that of Fort Donaldson, Tenn., leaving his wife with nine small children. Upon the shoulders of this son who was barely ten, fell a large part of the responsibility of the family.
While in his youth he joined the Baptist Church, being always loyal to the teaching. He and several of his family were members of the Gaston Springs Church a number of years. It was Mr. Ford's last request that he be brought back to his old home for burial beside the mother of his children.
