Joan Winifred Flynn Abbott, age 86, of Weeki Wachee, FL passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018. Joan was born December 31, 1931 in Boston, MA, the daughter of Martin and Nora Flynn.
Joan grew up in South Boston, true to her Irish heritage as a devoted Roman Catholic. During her marriage to her beloved husband Everett of 65 years they lived in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maryland, and Florida. Joan and Everett had a full life of travel to many countries with family and friends. Joan was the matriarch of her family which she loved very much. She was fortunate to have four generations of family surrounding her. Joan also had an enormous amount of friends that were dear to her. She was an advocate to the District of Columbia Police Wives Association in leadership roles for many years. During her tenure in the school systems in Prince George’s County Maryland and Hernando County Florida, she touched the lives of many students and facility. After retirement she loved to entertain many holiday and neighborhood gatherings at her home. Joan was known as a very talented cook. For those who knew her, Joan had the most amazing smile that lit up the room when you entered. We all love her very much and are truly blessed to have had her as part of our lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett D. Abbott. Survivors include sisters Barbara Moynihan and Patricia (Robert) Minichiello; daughter Sharon (Christopher) Abbott Balser; her son, Robert (Bobbie Jo) Abbott; daughter Denise Abbott Gray; grandchildren, Troy, Andrea, and Angela Balser; Kimberly and Alison Abbott; and Shannon Gray; ten great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Resurrection for Joan will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, September 7, 2018 at St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church, 5030 Mariner Boulevard, Spring Hill, FL 34609.
