John Wesley Holmes was born in Franklinville to Peter Holmes (1794-1864) and Rachel Stowell (1797-1866). John was brother to Hosea 1821-, Cicero 1823-, Lavina 1826-, Lovilo 1830-, Maria Louisa 1832-, and Coryidon 1837-.
John married Loraine Candace Chamberlain (daughter of L. Sumner Chamberlain and Maria Gillett) in March of 1854 in Wyoming Co., NY. and they had four children:
Wellington Fitzroy 1854-1923
Alice Josephine 1857-1923
Winfield Fremont 1862-1922
Homer Butler 1867-1895

John, Loraine, Wellington "Wellie" and Alice are in the 1860 Census in Rushford, Allegany Co., NY.
In the 1870, 1875, and 1880 they're all in Freedom, Cattaraugus Co. Along with Peter and Rachel , also living in Freedom.
