Mrs. Lucy Byers, widow of Richard Byers, and a resident of Charleston for over thirty-seven years, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Fedd Shannon, Connersville, Ind. Monday following an illness of six weeks, four of the weeks being spent in the Charleston hospital. Two weeks ago she was removed to Indiana by the sister at whose home she died. Death is attributed to a general breakdown followed by complications. The body will be brought to the Harper Funeral Home, Eight and Monroe streets, early Wednesday morning to await the funeral. The funeral services will be held a the First Christian church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the pastor, the Reverend H.L. Hayes, officiating. The burial will be in Mound cemetery.
Mrs. Byers, formerly Miss Lucy Wood, was born in Mattoon, in 1873, a daughter of John and Eliza Washburn Wood. She came to Charleston in 1897 to accept employment and has since made this city her home. On November 1, 1899, she was united in marriage with Richard E Byers, local business man and a veteran of the Spanish-American war. Mr. Byers died on May 10, 1925. There were no children born to the union. She leaves three brothers, Henry Wood, George Wood and Bert Wood, all of Mattoon, and a sister, Mrs. Fedd Shannon of Connersville, Ind.
Mrs. Byers was active in the work of auxiliary of the Spanish-American war veterans, the state and local circles of the Degree of Pocahontas, holding an office in the state organization, the Rebekahs and the Good Will Camp of Royal Neighbors. She was also active in the aid of the Democratic party, and had served numerous times on the election boards as well as on important committees of the party. Mrs. Byers took an active and keen interest in her lodge work, and had sponsored many of the entertainments given by the various orders, with which she held membership. She was a member of the Chistian church since early girlhood.
Mrs. Byers was well known to the majority of the citizens of Mattoon and Charleston and also had a wide acquaintance over this state as the result of her contact with her lodge work.
