MERIDEN, Conn. - A 58 year-old city man reported missing in South Meriden Tuesday was discovered dead in the woods near the Quinnipiac River early Wednesday.

Police say relatives of Carlton J. Gravell found him hanging from a tree about 8:30 a.m. Police said the death is believed to be a suicide.

Gravell, who police said was in poor health, was reported missing Tuesday morning. At 2:30 p.m., his car was discovered by his son parked near the Red Bridge, police said. Police officers and more than 25 volunteer and city firefighters searched the area northwest of Hanover Pond and along the river for six hours Tuesday evening. State and local police dogs were also called in to help in the search.

The effort was called off at 10 p.m. Tuesday when it was decided that continuing the search in the darkened woods would pose a hazard to the searchers. Police were planning to resume the search Wednesday morning when they were notified the body had been found.

Sgt. Charles West, police spokesman, said Gravell's body was discovered by family members deep in the woods off a path, not far from where officers had searched.

West said Gravell had suffered from heart problems and numerous other ailments.

Born in Owls Head, N.Y., he had resided in Meriden for the past 16 years. He served with the Army during the Korean War. He had been employed by Eyelet Specialty in Wallingford for nine years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Wallingford.
