"W.P.A. WORKER DIES IN FALL FROM TRUCK
DIES TWO HOURS LATER OF FRACTURED SKULL
Robert Ashfield, 40, Frackville, Fatally Hurt En Route to His Home From Work

Robert Ashfield, 40, of 44 North Lehigh avenue, Frackville, a W. P. A. worker, was fatally, injured yesterday afternoon when he fell under the wheels of a truck which was transporting him to his home from a project at Mud Run Dam, south of Frackville.
Dies in Hospital
Ashfield succumbed of a fractured skull at the Ashland State Hospital at 4:05 p. m., two hours after the accident occurred.

The victim, who was employed in securing stone for a road job near the scene of the mishap, was riding home with several other workers after completing his day's work.

After the truck had gone a short distance, Ashfield, in some manner, lost his hold and slipped under the rear wheels of the vehicle. Francis Cannon, of Ashland, driver of the truck, was unaware of the accident, and had driven for some distance before he heard the cries of other passengers that Ashfield had fallen off.

The injured man was rushed to the office of Dr. O. H. Mengel, of Frackville, who administered first aid treatment and ordered his removal to the hospital.

Dr. Mengel announced that an inquest will be held at a later date. No charges were preferred against the driver.

Patrolman C. L. Hamburger, of the Frackville State Motor Police detail, investigated at the request of the driver.

Native of Coles

Ashfield was born in Coles, a son of Mrs. Margaret and the late Joseph Ashfield, but had resided in Frackville for the past twenty years. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Thomas; his mother, and three brothers, George and William, Coles, and Thomas, Frackville.

The body was removed to the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Carolyn Thomas, North Sixth street, from where the funeral will take place. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Nice Estate." From Republican and Herald, July 12, 1938, page 1
