He was born about A.D. 966. Known as "The Chief" (or as "The Brown," after his hair), he reigned from 997 until he was slain in battle by the next King of the Scots, Malcolm II. He died circa 25 March 1005. Source: www.royal.uk; The Scottish Royal Dynasties, 842–1625 (chart).

From a memorial merged into this one:
Kenneth III was King of Scotland from 997 to 1005. He was the son of Dubid (935-966), King of Scotland.

Kenneth was the last King of Scotland to succeed to the throne through the system of tanistry , whereby the succession was shared between two family lines and the dying king named the person from the other family line who was to succeed him.
Kenneth and his son, Grick were both killed in the Battle at Monzievaird, Tayside, Scotland in 1005.

Kenneth had a granddaughter, Gruoch, who was the daughter of his son Boite. Her second marriage was to "MacBeth," who later became King of Scotland. After his murder, through Gruoch's son Lulach (by her first marriage), the royal line continued in Scotland, although his reign was brief.
