F. D. Epps, an old confederate soldier and wellknown citizen of Oxly died last week Thursday at his home, after a short illness, though he had been ailing for some months, as he was a sufferer from wounds received in battle during the war. His age was 78 [sic] years. He was buried at Antioch graveyard Friday. He leaves an aged sister, infirm, and four children grown. One by one the old soldiers are assembling for the last roll call, 44 years having passed since the tatoo was beat for the East parade in battle lines.

Died on last Thursday, p.m., in the 78th year of his age, F. D. Epps, an old ex-confederate, and much shot up soldier, and an old resident of this vicinity. He was interred, by the side of a son, in Antioch burying ground on Friday. He leaves behind him an aged and decrepit sister who lived with him, and four absent children.

[Note: Correct age would be closer to 67-70 per 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census. Absent from 1900 Census. Served in 1st Tennessee Infantry (CON). Shot in both legs at Chancellorsville, where his brother was killed. Two weeks later, his unit suffered 75% casualties as one of the only two units to break Union lines in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, so being shot in both legs likely saved his life and preserved his descendants' existence on this earth.]
