Mrs. Keziah Brooks, mother of Gwendolyn Brooks, poet laureate of Illinois, passed away at home, 4328 S. Champlain. Gwendolyn Brooks, who won a Pulitzer Prize for her poetry in 1950, said it was her mother who encouraged her to write.

The elder Mrs. Brooks’ book, “The Voice and Other Short Stories,” a collection of autobiographical essays, was published in 1977. She was a teacher.
