James D. Guare, 77, of Garwood died on Sunday, July 5, at his home.Born in Newark, he was raised inPerth Amboy and Rahway, and hadlived in Garwood for the last 44 years.Mr. Guare served in the UnitedStates Navy Militia prior to WorldWar II, and joined the Navy at age17.He was serving aboard the USSWasp CV7 when it was sunk atGuadalcanal on September 15, 1942.Mr. Guare served in the Navy duringthe Korean Conflict, and retired in1960 after 25 years of active andreserve duty.He was a member of the WaspSting Club since its inception.Mr. Guare had been employed byEsso/Exxon at Bayway Refinery for15 years, and retired from Ciba-GeigyPharmaceuticals of Summit in 1986 after 23 years of service.He was a 50-year member of the LaFayette Lodge No. 27 of Free andAccepted Masons, and of Royal ArchNo. 26, both of Rahway. In addition,he was a member of TrinityCommandery No. 17 of the Knights Templar of Plainfield.Mr. Guare was also a member of the Martin Wallberg Post No. 3American Legion of Westfield; a life member of Captain Newell RodneyFiske Post No. 335 of the Veterans ofForeign Wars of Cranford, and amember of the Old Guard of West-field.He was a communicant of the Trin-ity Episcopal Church in Cranford.Surviving are his wife of 52 years,Mary Augustoni Guare; two sons, J.Daniel Guare of Tucson, Arizona and Charles T.Guare of Folsom, Califor-nia, and five grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 10a.m. on Saturday, July 11, at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 NorthAvenue, in Cranford. Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.Visitation will be today, Thursday,July 9, from 7 to 9 p.m., and tomor-row, Friday, July 10, from 2 to 4 p.m.and from 7 to 9 p.m.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Muhlenberg Hospital Hospice or to the GarwoodFirst Aid Squad
