Sherman served 29 years as a Game Warden for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept., having been assigned to Shelby County, San Augustine County and Harrison County as well as Presidio County.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee. He was long involved with the Presidio County 4-H Adult Leaders and will be remembered for his enthusiastic involvement in building "the big Red Barn."

After retirement, he continued to be active in his small ranching operation, which he loved. He was a friend to every rancher in the Big Bend area. His legacy will live on in many lives he touched along the way.

Sherman is survived by his wife of 61 years, Clementine Bales of Marfa; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Gary Mitschke of Marfa; daughter, Betty Smith of White Sands, New Mexico; sons, Mike Bales and Jim Bales, both of Marfa; granddaughters, Erica Smith, Emily Couch, Courtney Woolley and Kirsten Bales; and great-grandchildren, Raymond Smith, Lily Couch, Daisy Couch, Rudy Smith, Ruth Smith, Austin Woolley, Rosie Couch and Dylan Woolley. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Patsy Bales of Round Top, Texas; sister, Josephine Danza of Florida; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman H. Sr. and Nell Bales; sisters, Marquerite Murphey, Mary Agnes Ward, Sara Nell Bales and Kathleen Hamlin; and brothers, Lawrence Bales and Jack Bales.
