Sarah Ann Partee was a daughter of Rebecca (née Swinehart) and Enoch Partee, born in 1826 in Noble Township, Williams County, Ohio. The Partee family were among the first settlers of that township, which was ceded to Defiance County when it was created in 1845.

Sarah Partee and Andrew Skeen were married on 2 August 1846 in Defiance, Defiance County, and were enumerated in 1850 in the county's Washington Township with three daughters. (Enumerated next to them were Susannah and Buckley Skeen: Sarah's sister and Andrew's brother.) In 1860, Sarah and Andrew Skeen were enumerated in Arrowsmith Township, McLean County, Illinois, apparently having arrived recently: son John was reported to be 3 months old and born in Ohio.* The Skeen family moved to neighboring Cheney's Grove Township by 1865.

Andrew Skeen died in September 1870. Sarah Skeen remained in McLean County. There in Saybrook, Cheney's Grove Township, on 22 June 1882 she married widower John M. Stansbury.† The couple shared a grandson, Carl, born in 1875: the son of Sarah's daughter Harriet and John's eldest son William who had married in 1872.

Sarah Stansbury died in 1898 at the age of 71 in Saybrook. She was survived by three daughters and her second husband.

Notes

Enoch Partee was enumerated in 1830 in Defiance Twp., Williams Co., Ohio. Regarding the Partee family's early settlement in what is now Noble Twp., Defiance Co., Ohio, see chapter on Noble Township in: History of Defiance County, Ohio (Chicago: Warner, Beers & Co., 1883), p. 335. 31. John ----- 3/12, Ohio.

There is a discrepancy in the census series between Skeen daughters Nancy J. and Harriet. A possible explanation is that the Nancy J. in the 1850 U.S. Census is not the same Nancy J. in the 1860 U.S. Census; that the Nancy J. in the 1850 U.S. Census had died before 1860; and that the Nancy J. in the 1860 census is an error for Harriet.

The Nancy J. age 1 in the 1850 census should have been about age 11 in the 1860 census—not age 5. (The ages of older sisters Minerva and Caroline advance appropriately from 1850 to 1860.). Harriet, age 15 in the 1880 census, should have been about age 5 in the 1870 census.

Harriet was reported in the 1900 census to be age 44, born in Nov 1855. According to her 1922 Indiana death certificate, she was born on 17 Nov 1854, daughter of ----- Skeen and ----- Partee.

This item provides several pieces of information. It shows that Mrs. John M. Stansbury (née Sarah Ann Partee) resided in Saybrook, and that her mother Rebecca would be living with her. It also indicates the year and place of death of Sarah's younger sister Marian Goodenough (née Partee), who had married Irvin C. Goodenough in 1862 in Defiance Co., Ohio.
