Honolulu Police officer, gravely wounded while on duty by John Good & accomplices, 17 Jan 1893. (One bullet to the chest). Reports give his name alternately as Kaleialoha / Leialoha. No charges were ever filed, as the assailants were among Dole's revolutionaries and soon after controlled government. Under protest, Her Majesty Queen Liliuokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom to the superior force of the United States of America "to avoid any collision of armed forces, and perhaps the loss of life."

The 1893 American-led armed invasion & coup was precipitated by the attempted murder of this policeman, and certainly NOT bloodless! Honolulu Police Officer J.W. Leialoha (Kaleialoha?) was shot in the chest mid-afternoon Jan 17, 1893; the plotters were violent & clearly ready to kill. Grievously-injured Leialoha spent 53 nights in The Queen's Hospital; in July he still complained of pain & limited use of his right arm. A week before Christmas 1893, the police force "weeded" royalists and summarily dismissed Leialoha & 21 other native police officers.

This was certainly a real person, but his story has been largely lost in post-coup whitewash. It is unclear at this instant his full proper name and where he was born & buried.

Potential further detail:
1900 census J W Leialoha, 44, b. Apr 1854 Hawaii 9749 King St and Peterson Lane; Customs House Guard
