Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. He was a member of both the 1956 and 1960 United States Olympic weightlifting teams, winning a Gold Medal in each of those Olympics. For three years prior to the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia he was the United States Senior National Champion in the bantamweight division. In the 1956 Games he defeated weightlifters from the Soviet Union and Iran and set a world record world-record with a three-lift (snatch, clean and jerk, overhead press) total of 342.5 kilograms (755.1 lb)to capture the bantamweight Gold Medal, joining teammates Isaac Berger, Tommy Kono and Paul Anderson as Gold Medalists in the competition. Between 1956 and 1956 he won two Pan-American Games gold medals, and was again the United States Senior National Champion. In the 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome, Italy, he won his second Olympic Gold Medal, defeating lifters from Japan and Iran to win the 56 kilogram weightlifting division, and was the only member of the American team to capture the Gold (four of his teammates won the Silver and one won the Bronze Medal). During his lifting career he set twelve world records.
