Samuel Boyd crossed the country first in 1849 and supposedly crossed it 49 more times (St. Louis/Alton to Oregon/Calif). When he was very young, he ran a remount station in the West, buying worn out horses from pioneers, feeding them, and reselling as fresh horses. He traveled in 1852 with his Uncle Nat Dutro and Aunt Mary Brown Dutro (who died on the trail). Sam worked as a prospector in California and then turned to wholesale grocery.

Sam lived in Alton, Illinois from 1858 to 1865 where he was a merchant for a variety of items, operating with his brothers as Davis Bros. and then as S.B. Davis & Co. He then traveled to NY to learn the process of cheese manufacturing, and took his knowledge to Wisconsin where he was a pioneer in the industry.

Sam moved to Chicago in 1867 and lived there until the early 1900s on Vincennes Ave., Aldine Square, and Hyde Park. He worked with his brothers Michael and William Henry as Davis Brothers, Ham Curers & Pork Packers and as the Davis Bros. Cheese Co. on South Water Street, working extensively in Wisconsin cheese. He joined with Louis Swift to originate the poulty packing division of the Swift Packaging Co. His own business was wholesale butter, eggs and cheese (Samuel B. Davis & Co. in Chicago, IL and Sheboygan, WI), but also worked with Davis & Jackson and Davis & Shuyler.

After traveling widely in the U.S. and abroad, he managed the Boston agency of the Forest City Creamery Co. (Borden Milk) renovated butter manufacturers in Rockford, Illinois and later in New York. A few years later, he took up the agency for the B.S. Pearsall Butter Co., and later developed a large brockerage business in cheese. He was regarded as an expert in the butter and cheese business.

Sam moved to Manhattan, NY where he lived until his death in 1917. He died at 580 St. Nicholas Ave (after living on W. 94th Street), Manhattan, NY, NY, aged 83 years (Interred at Woodlawn 02 May 1917). Documents claim he was a man of remarkable vitality (working/traveling even in his advanced years, earning him the reputation as the oldest man active in the industry, but with young appearance and action), and had possessed a well-earned reputation for high standards of business honesty.
