MERIDEN - Dorothy Danaher, aged 91, passed away March 4, 2011, at Connecticut Baptist Home.

Mrs. Danaher was born in Meriden, Feb. 8, 1920, the daughter of Henry J. and Susan Foell. She was the wife of Francis R. Danaher, an attorney and former five-term mayor of Meriden (1937-1948). Mrs. Danaher who lived in Meriden most of her life was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church and dedicated much of her life to community affairs including serving as Deputy Mayor and Trustee of St. Rose Church and on the Archdiocese Committee for the Advancement of Catholic Schools. She was involved in Boy Scouting, in Meriden, and Nationally since the 1940's in a variety of capacities including the National Cub Scout Committee, Executive Board National Catholic Committee and was Executive Board member of Quinnipiac Council BSA. She was Chairman of Archdiocese of Hartford Catholic Committee on Scouting and first Chairman of the Archdiocese Committee on Girl Scouting, Mrs. Danaher was active in Girl Scouting for 25 years and Chairman of Yankee Trails Girl Scout Council. Some of her happiest volunteer hours were spent as leader of a Mariner Girl Scout Troop at Maloney High School. For her work in Boy Scouting, Mrs. Danaher received numerous awards including the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and Good Scout Award from Boy Scouts of America, and the St George Award from the National Catholic Committee BSA. She received the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award, papal honors from Pope John Paul (The highest award the Pope can present to a woman.) In addition to serving as Deputy Mayor of Meriden, Mrs. Danaher was a member of the City Council, Chairman of the Economic Development Housing and Zoning Committee and member of the School Building Committee. She was a strong conservation advocate and served on the Conservation Commission where she earned the name "Meriden's Tree Lady" for her efforts to identify and protect the city's street trees. Additionally, as a member of the Conservation Commission she was one of those instrumental in saving Meriden's trap-rock ridges. She was politically astute and involved, and served Meriden, Middletown and Middlefield on the Republican State Central Committee. Mrs. Danaher was a founding member of the Meriden Land Trust and after its establishment donated its first piece of property located on Preston Ave. She helped establish Birthright in New Haven and The Connecticut Silver Museum and Castle Bank. Dorothy's passion was travel. She had traveled the world from Syria and Egypt, to Singapore and Japan, all Central American countries and many South American Countries. Dorothy spent her summers in Middle Haddam.

Her five children, Francis Jr., Terrence, Patrick, Kenan and Alannah Coshow, 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren survive her.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial to be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at 10 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Center Street, Meriden, with the Rev. Paul F. Kenefick officiating. Everyone is asked to meet directly at Church. Burial will in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the John J.
