BRAZIL - James F. Thistle, husband of Julia, father of Jim and daughter-in-law Jennifer, father of Sarah and son-in-law Ryan, Papaw of Charlotte and good friend of Graham and Ava went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 17, 2018, following a brief, yet valiant, battle with cancer.

Jim began his life in Sistersville, W.Va., on Nov. 1, 1947, as the son of William B. and Martha Gene (Conant) Thistle. As a young boy Jim's family moved to Erie, Pa., where his father began working for G.C. Murphy Company. Following a short tenure with the company in Pennsylvania they relocated to Brazil, Ind., where Bill worked for many area G.C. Murphy stores. Jim attended Brazil High School where he was involved in the band and drama programs. He graduated from Brazil High School with the class of 1965 and began studying education at Indiana State. While attending college he majored in music and graduated with a master's degree in music education. Jim was employed by the Clay Community School Corporation, as a music teacher and band director, where he impacted the lives of his students for over 30 years.

Jim was an active member of Christ Community Church where he served on the worship team. Jim has worked as a professional musician in the Wabash Valley for over 50 years and played drums with various bands such as: The Baxter Band, area concert bands, and the Men of Note. Jim's dedication to music earned him a place in the Wabash Valley Music Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jim was an avid collector of model trains and hit-and-miss farm engines.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gene Thistle.

Jim is survived by his wife, Julia Thistle, whom he married on Aug. 8, 1970; a son, James "Jay" Thistle and wife Jennifer of Nashville, Tenn.; daughter, Sarah Kidd and husband Ryan of West Chester, Ohio; grandchildren, Charlotte Kidd, Graham Kidd, and Ava Kidd; a sister, Nancy Ibberson and husband John of Riley, Ind.; a nephew, Christopher Ibberson; as well as a host of friends.

Visitation will be at Christ Community Church, 10942 State Road 59, Brazil, IN 47834 on Friday, June 22, 2018, from 3 to 8 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at the church on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 1 p.m. Private graveside services will be held at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church, on Saturday, from noon until time of services.

Pall bearers will be Ryan Kidd, Jim Thistle, Randy Koehler, Mike Connors, Shane Robertson, Larry McCoy, Reza Farid, and Norm Hanson. Honorary pall bearers will be Chris Ibberson, Chris Buck, Kenny Ripple, Pete Kikta and Terry Timberman.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Inside Out Recovery, 1408 E. Hendrix St, Brazil, IN 47834; and the Northview Band Boosters, 3150 West State Road 340 Brazil, IN 47834. Donations will be expressly earmarked to assist students with band fees.
