Maxine "Peggy" Hartnell, 85, passed away May 27, 2014. Born Maxine Joyce Dux, May 11, 1929, in Bellingham. She was one of three children born to Frederick and Ida (Raymond) Dux. Peggy graduated from Bellingham High School in 1947 and worked for many years as a hairdresser and instructor at Bellingham Beauty School. She was an active member of the Deming Log Show Ladies Auxiliary for more than twenty years, including three years as president of the annual barbecue. She loved these events, which combined many of her favorite pastimes, including camping, cooking, and time spent with family and friends. Peggy enjoyed motorhome trips with her companion Gene, and their many good friends, including John and Lil Morgan, Paul and Lorraine Tice, and Earl and Ernestine Essex. She loved campfires, casino nights, jigsaw puzzles, Scrabble, hummingbirds, and was an enthusiastic Seattle Mariners fan. Above all she loved family gatherings. Of all her achievements she was proudest of her children and grandchildren, and seldom missed an opportunity to brag on them. We will miss her humor, strength and grace in the face of failing health, her thoughtful cards for every special occasion, her youthful enthusiasm for "gadgets" and holiday traditions, her reporting of the latest news from a Facebook friend, or from 'googling' on her well worn iPad. Most of all, we will miss her unwavering love. Peggy is survived by her loving and loyal partner of more than forty years, Gene Olney; sons and their spouses Randy and Carla Hartnell, and Terry and Laura Hartnell; daughter and spouse, Alinda and Raymond Ruhle; daughter and companion, Shari Hartnell and Mike Larsen; grandchildren Torrie, Heather and Tyson Ruhle, Rachael, Brennan and Mallory Hartnell; three great grandchildren, and one niece and two nephews; stepson and spouse, Dave and Ann Olney. Peggy was preceded in death by her brother Edward L. Dux, and sister, Donalee J. West; and by stepson Michael Olney. A celebration of Peggy's life will be held on Thursday, June 5th, 2014 at the Squalicum Boathouse, 2600 S. Harbor Loop, Bellingham, WA at 12:30 p.m., with graveside services following at Greenacres Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Whatcom Hospice, 2800 Douglas Ave, Bellingham, 98225.
