Major was captured in Siberia in 1966 and moved to a science center in Worcester now known as the Ecotarium in 1971 before being transferred to the Stone Zoo in 1975. He weighed about 900 pounds, stood over 8 feet tall and lived to be 33 years old — the oldest known polar bear in captivity. He was put to sleep in June of 2000 after a long bout with cancer.
