SOUTH CHINA -- Evelyn Ward Althenn, a South China resident, passed away on Nov. 22, 2003, at the age of 82.

Mrs. Althenn was the mother of Beverly M. Maris and Albert W. Althenn of South China. Evelyn was born on Jan. 1, 1921, in New York City to the late Albert E. and Amelia K. Ward. She was also predeceased by her husband, Albert C.; her son, Ronald C.; and her sister, Valerie W. Finnegan.

She was an animal lover, environmentalist and a person who passionately wanted to know China Lake was returned to its natural regime before her death.

She was an accomplished executive secretary as a young woman; Evelyn worked for Pan American Airlines in New York City.

During World War II she lived in Clovis, N.M., where her husband, Albert, was a B-24 and B-29 pilot in the Army Air Corps. After the war she and her family moved back to their Maine family roots in China.

During the 1950s and 1960s she was the proprietor of an antiques shop on Lakeview Drive in South China; on several occasions she entered her antiques in the prestigious New York City Armory Antiques show. In the late 50, Evelyn was the secretary for the successful gubernatorial candidate Clinton A. Clausen from Waterville during his election bid. Until recently, Mrs. Althenn, an avid philatelist, had a stamp-collection business in South China.

As a seventh-generation member of the Josiah Ward family of South China, Evelyn assisted the publishers of the China, Maine, Bicentennial History, published in 1974 and revised in 1984, by supplying information on the Ward family.

In addition to her son and daughter, Evelyn is survived by one granddaughter, two grandsons, two nieces, two grandnephews and a greatÐgrandnephew.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 1:30 p.m. at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, Windsor Neck Road in Windsor, with Rev. Joseph Cahill officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather at the funeral from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the spring at Chadwick Hill Cemetery in South China.

It is the family's wishes that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Connor Animal Shelter, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta 04330.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Gray Chapel, Windsor.
