Joan Marie Larson passed away in Folsom, Calif., on May 6, 2018. Joan Marie was born to Carl "Cully" and Lucille Nelson on June 21, 1930, in Menominee, Mich.
Joan grew up across the river in Marinette, Wis., the oldest of nine children. In her middle and high school years, she discovered her passion for singing, earning numerous awards throughout the state of Wisconsin. Joan graduated from Lourdes HIgh School in 1948.
A year later, [June 3, 1951] Joan married Dick Larson and moved to Southern California to start their life together. Joan returned to school in the 1960s, attending American River College, and in 1970 was in the first graduating class in their nursing program. She had a 20-year career as an RN in Folsom.
Joan is survived by three daughters: Christina (Ken) Kettleman, Cathy (Ray) Flohr and Claire McDonald;
five grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
five sisters: Valeria LeBoeuf, Camille Loewecke, both of Menominee, MI; Bianca (John) Anderla of Appleton, WI; Cynthia Hanlon of Boron, CA and Merri (Raymond) Gansebom of Peshtigo WI;
and one brother, Peter (Cecelia) Nelson of Riverside, Ill.
a sister-in-law Pat Nelson of Arvada, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Wayne "Dick" Larson; her parents; and her brothers: Dennis and Carl "Bunny" Nelson.
A memorial Mass for Joan will be held July 3 at Holy Spirit Church, Menominee, at 9 a.m. Officiating at the Mass will be her nephew, Karl Kiser SJ of Ohio. Favorite hymns sung by Joan will be played at the church.
Joan will be buried next to her husband, Dick, and close to her mother and father and the rest of the Nelson relatives at Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette.
