Hermann's' parents were Christopher Lichte and Mary Ellermann. Christopher Lichte, Hermann's father, was born in the Prussian village of Gohfeld. Christopher's surname was passed down to him from his mother, Anne Marie Catharine Lichte. His father was Samuel Heinrich Heldt, a colonist or farmer. It was customary for the husband of a woman who inherited land to take the woman's surname rather than the wife taking the husband's. Apparently Christopher Lichte's mother was a landowner by inheritance when she married Samuel Heldt. Christopher Lichte and Mary Ellermann were married 26 December 1817 in the Lutheran Evangelical church in Gohfeld. A few years later they moved to Melbergen where Hermann Heinrich was born in 1823.

Descendants of HH Lichte attended the Lichte School on present day Highway U south of Warrenton, MO, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Apparently the land and school were donated by Hermann and Caroline's son, Julius Lichte. This school house/home was in private hands in 2003. Hermann died 13 December 1875 (headstone) or 14 December 1875 (family records) just one week before his wife, Caroline. Dates vary. Caroline died 21 Jan 1875. The couple share the obelisk in Hochfeld Evangelical Church Cemetery.
Herman Lichte was an early member of the Hochfeld Church, organized in 1875, south of Warrenton on Pinckney Ridge Road; this road is the present Highway U. This church was organized because there were no churches of the Evangelical faith in the area. Mr. E. Dothage and Mr. F Backs donated the land and the members decided to name it Hochfeld Evangelical Church. Hochfeld means high field and the land selected was on the side of a hill (source: various papers from Warren County Historical Society: "Hochfeld Church Restored," author unknown; "Hochfeld Evangelical Church" by Mrs. Oscar Stuecktemeyer).
