Joyce B. Hyman, 55, of the 1200 block of Alcindor Drive, died Jan. 13, 2003, in Richmond, Va.

A native of Norfolk, she retired from the the U.S. Navy civil service as a supply clerk and was a member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, member of the Prayer Praise Team, Angelic Choir, Floral Club, Prayer Partner and the Youth Organization.

Mrs. Hyman was a high school graduate and completed two years of college toward nursing. She received recognition for white collar employee of the quarter in January, February and March of 1994, was an honorary Girl Scout and received the Strong, Smart and Bold Armory Award.

Survivors include her husband, Gary L. Hyman; daughter, Sandy S. Clayton of Richmond; son, Kenneth M. Johnson of Richmond; sisters, Susie B. Biggs of Petersburg, Va., Rita Mae Butler of Philadelphia, Pa., Doris Williams of Greenville, N.C., Faye Bess of New Haven, Conn., Rachel Biggs of Chesapeake, Deborah Biggs-Solomon of Norfolk, Terry Biggs-Brown (Bobby) of Silver Spring, Md., Felicia R. Biggs of Chesapeake; sisters-in-law, Joan Maben (Tony) of Virginia Beach and Ruth Joyner of Capitol Heights, Md.; brothers, Ronald Vines of San Diego, Calif., Alonzo Vines (Cennia) of Norfolk, Jeffrey Biggs (Elise) of Norfolk, Michael Biggs (Linda) of Chesapeake, Stuart A. Biggs of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; brother-in-law, Alfred Hyman (Dorothy) of Norfolk; grandchildren, Iman Clayton and Kenneth M. Painter; her dog, Brittan; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and best friends, Wanda Bailey and Joyce Hoskie. She was predeceased by her parents, Ophelia Dixon and Alonzo Biggs; her stepmother, who raised her, Inez C. Vines (FAG 186918418); her brother, James Joyner; and her grandparents.

There will be a wake at 7 p.m. this evening. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, 2201 Wingsfield Ave., Chesapeake, by Dr. Donald F. Taylor Sr. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Cemetery. Hale Funeral Home, 2100 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, is in charge.
