Richard Barré Dunning, 2nd Baron Ashburton was the son of John Dunning, 1st Baron Ashburton and Elizabeth Baring. He married Anne Selby Cunninghame, daughter of William Cuninghame, 1st of Lainshaw and Margaret Nicolson Cranstoun, on 17 September 1805 at Lainshaw. He died on 15 February 1823 at age 40 at Friar's Hall, Roxburghshire, Scotland, without issue.
He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Ashburton, of Ashburton, Devon [G.B., 1782] on 18 August 1783.
He wrote the book Genealogical Memoirs of the Royal House of France, published before 1823, published in 1825. On his death, the Barony of Ashburton became extinct.
