William O Bates, 76, of 3247 Grove Avenue, Lorain, was dead on arrival yesterday evening at St. Joseph Hospital. He had been a resident here for 51 years coming from Tennessee.
He was employed as a turn foreman in the Fuel and Power Department at U.S. Steel Lorain - Cuyahoga Works. He retired in 1962 after 40 years of service. He was a veteran of World War I.
Surviving are his wife Jennie V; one son, James, a district manager for The Journal: one daughter, Mrs. Jean Kathleen Perkins of Wellington; three brothers, Wallace of Lorain, Albert and Robert, both of Tennessee: three sisters, Mrs. Gladys Webb, Mrs. Mary Bond and Mrs. Ruth Boeing, all of Tennessee; 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Harry 1966, Calvin in 1968, and Thomas H in 1974.
Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Reichlin Cooley Funeral Home. Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, the Rev. Paul Kirk, officiating. Burial in Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
