Third child of John Michael and Elizabeth (Naffziger) Kistler. In 1862 Joseph and his brother Daniel enlisted in the 94th Illinois Infantry Regiment - "The McLean Regiment" - and fought at the Battle of Vicksburg among other places. Joseph married Harriet Bradbury in 1867, who died shortly thereafter. After moving to Grant township, Dade Co., Missouri, he married Anna Mariah Merrill. They had two childern: Josie A. Kister (Morris), and Arthur Woodward Kistler.
