Max W. Thommen peacefully passed away at his home on Sunday July 1, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

He entered the United States Army in 1952 in which he served 21 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. In addition to serving his country stateside Max was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War, served two terms of duty in Germany, and was with the 101th Airborne division in Vietnam (1968-1969) during the Vietnam War where he earned The Bronze Star, The Air Medal, and The Army Commendation Medal. Upon retiring from the Army he worked for Humana for 18 years. While stationed at Fort Knox, KY, he met and married the love of his life, Lou Ella Thommen (Swope), he beloved wife of 49 years who preceded him in death in 2005.

He leaves to cherish his memory four daughters, Renay Thommen (Russ Ray), Cynthia Roehrs (Jeff), Kim Roberts (Tim Slayton), Jennifer (Lampe) Thommen; five grandchildren Andrew Roberts (Amanda), Caitlin Mann (Allen Hartz), Cortney Hardin (Brent), Meghan (MC) Lampe (Stephanie Parks), and Emily Lampe (Andrew Smith); seven great-grandchildren, Jacob and Sarah Mann, LouElla, Sy and Max Roberts and Micah and Hannah Hardin and a wealth of family and friends.

Max loved gardening, woodworking, his church, his country, and his faithful companion, Fluffy; but more than anything he loved and cherished his family.

He was a long standing member of Cloverleaf Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Deacon Emeritus and Sunday School Director for many years.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Friday, July 6, 2018 at Louisville Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4400 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens-West. Visitation will be Thursday July 5, 2018 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
