Pioneer of Community Dies in California
Mrs. Mary Royce Wolff, old time resident of the Arvada community, died in Orange California, Monday, March 16, according to word received by friends here. Mary Royce was born near Oberlin, Ohio, Jan. 23, 1846, being over 85 years of age at the time of her death. She was educated at Oberlin college and taught school at first in what was then the wilderness at Green Bay, Wisconsin. In 1864, she came with her parents to Denver, after beating off several Indian attacks and braving the perils of the big Platte river flood. While here she made her home with her uncle, B. F. Wadsworth. She was married to Charles King and went with him to Montana, and then in a covered wagon through the "Mormon country" to California, where her husband taught in the College of Santa Rosa. Here her husband died, and she returned to Colorado, and taught for a time in the Arvada and Loveland schools. She was married later to Albert Wolff and resided on the Wolff place until his death. She was prominent in church and grange work at that time and was an officer in the Community Sunday school for six years. Since 1923 she has resided at Santa Ana, Calif., with her children. She is survived by two sons, Percy H. Wolff and C. A. Wolff of Santa Ana, a brother, H. W. Royce of Portola, Calif., and two grandchildren, Kenneth and Alberta Wolff. Funeral services will be held from the Olinger mortuary in Denver Monday of next week and burial will be made in the Crown Hill cemetery.
