Grace was cellist, nurse, flight attendant, philanthropist, and the wife of Capt. Lewis Stanhope Nixon who was a member of Easy Company, 101st Airborne Division during World War Two. The men of Easy company were the subject of many books. The most widely known is BAND OF BROTHERS. This was made into the HBO series by the same name & was written Presidential Historian Steven E. Ambrose. Grace & Lewis married in 1956. After his death in 1995,she worked tirelessly with everyone involved with the making of the movie BAND OF BROTHERS( 2001).

Grace was studying cello at San Diego State University when her studies came to a halt due to FDR's Executive Order 9066,that authorized the internment of Japanese Americans. Told to only bring what they could carry,Grace and her family were taken to the assembly area at Santa Anita Racetrack. The were housed in horse stalls, but Grace continued to show her lively spirit. From Santa Anita they were sent to the Colorado River Relocation Center in Poston,Arizona. Grace was unhappy there and changed the direction of her life by becoming a nurse at the MAYO Clinic, so that she could help the wounded coming home from the war.

In the following years, married to Captain Nixon they traveled the world, listened to music, supported charitable causes, and raised pets including Anubis the cat,Nicholas the one eyed dog,& Peter the rabbit. They loved feeding the raccoons in the area and the annually migrating Mr.& Mrs.Duck.

Lewis & Grace spent time with their nieces and nephews, teaching them cards, backgammon,& playing for keeps over the children's allowance money!

She subscribed to the LA Philharmonic, loved raising roses & even studied horticulture at UCLA. Grace was a faithful Dodgers fan & a member of Crossway Church in San Fernando Valley. She is survived by her siblings George & Dorothy; stepson Michael; grandsons Miguel & Will; 14 nieces and nephews, numerous grand nieces & grand nephews as well as her devoted cat Binky. Her parents Kiyokichi & Sachiko Dendo Umezawa;siblings Lillian Hinako & Florence Himeko preceded her in death.
