He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Yorktown during World War II.
He served as custodian for the Bank of Thayer and Shady Oaks Health Care for many years. He was a school bus driver for the Thayer School District and was a talented carpenter.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his wife, Janice of the home in Thayer; a son, Jimmy Houts Jr. of Thayer; two daughters, Cindy Trail and husband, Roger of Thayer; and Sherry Capps of Springfield, MO; seven grandchildren, Austin, Karissa, Stephanie, Nicole, Mia, Jamie and Buffy; several great-grandchildren; special aunts, Mary Lee Parnell, Hazel Bennett and Ola Risner and a special uncle, J.D. Ary all of Thayer; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services were Aug. 9 at Shiloh Grand Gulf Cemetery near Thayer with Bill Banks officiating. Military honors were presented by Missouri Funeral Honors Program and Veterans Honor Guard of West Plains. Arrangements were under the direction of Carter Funeral Home Inc. of Thayer, MO.
Pallbearers were James Harper, Larry Harper, Rodney Harper, Jerry Harper, Jeremy Harper and Roger Trail.
