Fred Naef, Jr., 76, passed away January 6, 2013 at Fairfax Inova Hospital, the result of complications from injuries suffered in a car accident on December 26, 2013. A 45 year resident of Reston, Fred was the beloved husband of Barbara Naef, the much loved father of Lauren Kennedy and Derick Naef (Colony Brown), the treasured grandfather of Thomas and David Kennedy, Turner, Sullivan and Elsa Naef. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia MacLaury. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Fred served in the nuclear submarine force before moving on to a variety of civilian careers, always on the cutting edge of new technologies. He was instrumental in developing one of the first salmon farming operations in Washington State in the early 1970s. From there, with Lockheed Corporation, he worked on the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) project that resulted in a prototype demonstration in Hawaii. He participated in the Law of the Sea efforts in early 1980s, and concluded his professional career involved in the "Star Wars" program. He was the author of four novels and known by all as an extraordinary maker of desserts. Services in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 26th, 1 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston, VA. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of Fred's lifelong pursuit of learning, the family suggests a donation to an educational institution of your choice.
