William, known to friends and family as "Bill", is preceded in death by his father, Andrew Garcia, of Merced, California and his mother, Stella Petree, of Snelling, California. He is survived by his spouse, Kevin Dougherty, of Snelling, California, and his brothers, Michael Gamble of New Berlin, Illinois and John Garcia of Merced.
William grew up in Merced and Salinas, California. At a young age he moved to Southern California and pursued an acting career. Acting was the passion of his life and he starred and performed in many theatrical productions including stage, television and film. He made his professional acting debut over 50 years ago as Boris Karloff's grandson in "On Borrowed Time." He has appeared in nearly 100 theatrical productions over his lifetime. He took pride in the fact the he never received a bad review.
Fresh out of college, he co-founded, directed and designed for the Festival Theater of El Paso. There, he sang musical leads such as Og in Finian's Rainbow, and won critical acclaim as Tartuffe. He played principal roles in both the Ashland, Oregon Shakespeare Festival and San Diego's National Shakespeare Festival at the Old Globe. He played four unique character roles in Cyrano deBergerac starring Richard Chamberlain and portrayed Malcolm in McBeth with Charleston Heston and Venessa Redgrave. He also appeared in leading roles for the Victory Theater and Theater 40.
His film and a television credits included Foul Play, R.P.M., Starman, Murder She Wrote, T. J. Hooker, Romeo and Juliet, Richard the II, General Hospital, Days of Our Lives and Santa Barbara. He also starred in local productions in Merced at the Merced Playhouse and in productions in Stanislaus County.
Bill was very active in animal rescue in Merced County and adopted out many animals through Last Hope in Atwater. His kindness will be remembered and treasured by all those who knew and loved him.
