Funeral Service will be celebrated Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at 11:00 am at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette for Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) John E. "Sandy" Sanderson, age 87, who passed away at Lafayette General Medical Center on Saturday, July 14, 2018, due to complications after a heart attack.

Interment will follow in Fountain Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette.

Pastor Bryan Seymore of Lafayette Seventh-day Adventist Church, will officiate.

John was born July 4, 1931, in Memphis, TN and was a long-time resident of Acadiana.

A proud veteran, he joined the US Air Force in 1948 and served in the Korean War between 1950-1951. John’s military decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Army of Occupation Japan Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award, the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Award, the Air Medal, the NCO PME Graduate Ribbon and the United Nations Service Medal.

After his military retirement in 1975, he settled in Nacogdoches, TX and began working for Texas Community Antenna (TCA). Later John transferred to Lafayette, where he worked as an engineer for Cox Communications, TCA’s parent company.

John was the Head Deacon of Lafayette Seventh-day Adventist Church and was active in his community. His efforts were instrumental in establishing the Lafayette Chapter of Affiliated Blind of Louisiana (ABL) and in creating the ABL Center that serves as a training facility for blind and handicapped people in Lafayette. John enjoyed a variety of activities including restoring classic cars, woodworking, electronics, riding his Harley Davidson and researching his ancestries. He formed many friendships in his neighborhood on his daily three-mile walk with his beloved Jack Russell, “Bo”. Faith, family and friends were the most important things in his life.

John is survived by three sons, Claude V. Sanderson of Oklahoma City, OK, James E. Sanderson and his wife, Phyllis of Burkesville, KY and Bruce N. Sanderson and his wife, Mariana of Houston, TX; six grandchildren, John, Nolan, Chris, Jason, Amanda and Ryan; six great-grandchildren, Blake, Analei, Ashton, Ethan, Eli and Arlo and numerous dear nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marion Griner Sanderson; his parents, Carl V. and Alice A. Chambers Sanderson and one son, Dale Alan Sanderson.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of Lafayette General Medical Center for the compassionate care given to John and his family.
