WHITE RIVER JUNCTION - Edwin J. McKenney, 85, died July 26, 2009, at home, after a long illness.

He was born in Hanover, N.H., June 11, 1924, the son of Charles E. and Marie A. (Bonhomme) McKenney.

He was a 1943 graduate of Hartford High School.

Mr. McKenney was a World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran flying combat missions in the Pacific Theatre as a tail gunner on a B-25 aircraft with the 345th Bomb Group of the 499th Squadron. After the war ended, he was transferred to the 38th Bomb Group of the 71st Squadron serving with the Occupation Forces on the mainland of Japan where he earned the rank of first sergeant.

After his honorable discharge from military service, he attended two years of automotive schooling in Springfield, Mass.

He married Catherine P. Whittier Nov. 19, 1949, in Rutland.

Mr. McKenney worked as an auto mechanic for approximately three years. From 1952 until 1963, he held the positions of yard brakeman and foreman on the Boston & Maine Railroad. In 1963, he established Law-Mac Builders Construction Co. for light commercial buildings and residential homes until 1980. At that time, he maintained apartment buildings and after retirement, he assisted in designing and building the homes for his children.

He was a Eucharistic minister at St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, boating, summer softball and traveling.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary McKenney of White River Junction and Douglas McKenney of Hartford; two daughters, Nancy Bachelder of White River Junction and Ann Vella of Ascutney; four grandsons, three granddaughters and a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Nelson McKenney of Hartford and John McKenney of White River Junction; a sister, Rose Temple of White River Junction; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. McKenney was predeceased by an infant son, Edwin McKenney Jr.; two brothers, William and Lawrence McKenney; two sisters, Mildred Ladue and Sister Catherine McKenney.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 31, at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
