WILLIAM EARNeY, who for the last 30 years has been engaged in farming in Waumandee township, Buffalo county, was born in Belvidere township, Nov. 18, 1858, son of Gerhardt and Elizabeth (Baal) Earny. The father was a native of Baaden, Germany, and was three times married, having no children, however, by his two first wives. By his third wife, Elizabeth, he had eight, namely: William, the subject of this sketch; Mary Kaiser-Bartsch, who lives in Philadelphia; John, a resident of Buffalo City; Paulina, who is the wife of Wm. Wolfe, and resides in Arcadia, Wis.; Rose, wife of Charles Averbeck, of Alma; Joseph, who lives in Bay City, Wis., and Charles, who resides in Nelson.

Gerhardt Earney, the father, was an early settler in Buffalo county, and spent his active years in farming, finally retiring about six years before his death, which occurred May 10, 1910. His wife, Elizabeth, died in Belvidere, at the age of 54 years.

William Earney acquired the elements of knowledge in the school of his district in Belvidere township. His early industrial experience was gained on the home farm, where he continued to reside until his marriage, although sometimes working out. On his marriage at the age of 27 years he rented a farm on Alma Ridge, which he operated for five years, or until 1888, when he bought the farm on which he now resides. It contains 310 acres, of which about 170 acres are cleared, the rest being in woodland and bluff. Mr. Earny is engaged chiefly in dairying and hog raising, though he also raises the ordinary farm crops. He has a good herd of graded Holstein cattle, with a full-blooded bull. His barn, a substantial structure with stone basement, measures 36 by 80 feet, and was erected by him in 1913. Eight years previously, in 1905, he had rebuilt his residence. In 1887

Mr. William Earney was united in marriage with Anna Henning, who was born in Belvidere township, Aug. 16, 1868, daughter of Charles and Rica (Deising) Henning, her parents being natives of Germany. She was one of six children, namely: Lena, Lizzie, Mary, Charles, Anna and Ida, of whom Lena, Mary, Charles and Ida are now deceased. The father Charles Henning was a farmer during all his active life.

To Mr. and Mrs. William Earny eleven children were born: Martha, wife of Fred Fluer, of Alberta, Canada; Frances, who married Heino Schroeder, and lives in Nelson; Wilma, who died at the age of 18 years; Martin, in U. S. Service; Emma, wife of Otto Butzmann, of Alma; Edwin, living on the home farm; Clara, wife of William Henninger, of Alma; Adam and Lyman, residing at home; Alice, who died when two years old; and another child, who died in infancy.
