Hugh Conwell "Bear" Bryant , 95, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018. He was born at home in Homewood. He never wanted to live anywhere else.

He was the son of Walter Thomas Bryant (1880-1959) and Mary Cross Tillerson Bryant (1887-1939), the ninth of 10 children.

He is preceded in death by his 3 brothers and 6 sisters; Floy Louisa Bryant Foster (1904-1997), Helen Bryant Stephenson (1905-1988), Walter Pruitt Bryant (1907-1992), Mauriel Bryant Foster (1909-?), Gladys Mae Bryant Pitts (1911-1987), Charles Clifford Bryant (1914-1956), Mary Bryant Oglesby (1916-1982), William Jefferson Bryant (1918-1979) and Gloria Faye Bryant Saliba (1927-2015).

After he got married in 1944, he walked across the street from his home house and built a house in a peach orchard and lived there for over 70 years until his passing.

Hugh worked at U.S. Steel from the time he was discharged from the Army after WWII, until he retired.

He was married to Ora Irene Baker Bryant for 74 years known as "Flick". They were married June 8th, 1944 in Jefferson County, Alabama.

He actively served his church and community most of his life and was a charter member of Raleigh Avenue Baptist Church in Homewood. He lived well and loved well.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Flick; sons Ronnie Bryant (Kay), Gerald Bryant (Margie) and daughter Denise Gamble (Dennis). He has 8 grandchildren: Rhett Bryant (Tracy), Amie Bond (Tyler), Kacie Ice, Christopher Gamble (Stephanie), Daniel Gamble (Lindsey), Brady Gamble (Ashley), Austin Gamble (Katie) and Peyton Gamble (Meghan); 9 great grandchildren: Hampton, Olen and Francis Bryant; Murphy and Fletcher Bond; Hannah Ice; Addison and Memphis Gamble and Amelia Gamble and a host of nieces and nephews and other family members and friends.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life Service following at 2:00 p.m. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery.
