Ruth Evelyn Elizabeth Vissering was born Sept. 6, 1925 in rural Flanagan to Peter J. and Phoebie Barth Vissering. She first attended the local one-room school house and later graduated from Flanagan High School.
She married Tjark Vernon Rients on June 1, 1947. He died Aug. 27, 1994. After high school, she worked in the Office of Price Administration (OPA) during World War II. She regularly helped her husband on the family farm for over 40 years and continued to help her son and grandson by bringing meals during harvest until the age of 90.
Her devout faith in God kept her involved in her church as a Sunday school teacher, regular Bible study participant and volunteer for numerous church activities. She and her husband, T.V., enjoyed wintering in Arizona, visiting family at her sister's lake house and participating in bowling leagues. Later in her life she enjoyed hiking trips and tent camping with her son, Craig, and his family. She was devoted to her family and took special interest in attending all their special events. As a 19-year cancer survivor she participated in the Livingston County Relay for Life.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sisters, Elsie Hunsicker, Edna Schneider, Ethel Otto and her brother, Allen Vissering.
She is survived by her sons, Lynn Rients, Graymont and Craig (Connie) Rients, Mesa, Arizona; four grandchildren, Abigail (Michael) Harner, Graymont; Aaron (Jessica) Rients, Pontiac; Carlie (Brian) Thompson, Pittstown, New Jersey and Cody Rients, Salt Lake City, Utah; five great-grandchildren, Aidan and Allison Harner, Casey and Levi Rients and Briley Thompson and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
