Edward Aaron, coal miner, aged about 45 years, attacked his wife, Margaret Aaron last Thursday afternoon at 2:00 and inflicted fatal wounds with a hatchet, death resulting at 9:30 p. m. The couple lived at Pennsy Mines, about five miles from Clarion. Neighbors say they heard them quarreling and Mrs. Aaron complaining to her husband about his drinking the past few days. When their son, who lives with them, left the home to go to the Pennsy Mine No. 12, near the Aaron home, Aaron is alleged to have attacked his wife with a hatchet; her screams and calls for help aroused the neighbors who sent to the mine for the son, who accompanied by the pit boss, went to the Aaron home, but too late to be on any service to Mrs. Aaron, who was discovered lying in a pool of blood in an unconscious state. Dr. Woods of Curllsville was called and after an examination discovered that the skull was fractured in one place and cut in another. The two blows with a hatchet causing these wounds, one apparently made with the hammer end of the hatchet and the other with a corner of the blade. The doctor gave no hopes for her recovery and thought that it would be dangerous to attempt to move her in her serious condition. For hours Mrs. Aaron was barely living, no pulse could be found, but she was still breathing very gently. After Dr. Woods examination, Sheriff John H. Sloan and County Detective Chester L Beatty were called and hurrying to the Aaron home placeed Aaron under arrest and put him in the county jail at Clarion late Thursday afternoon. Aaron had been drinking police said and that was believed to be the cause of the quarrel. The couple had been separated several times but became reconciled each time. Both were middle-aged. They had two sons, Edward, Jr. and William, each over 21 years of age. Late Friday afternoon an information charging Edward Aaron with the murder of his wife, Margaret, at Pennsy Mine No. 12, near Reidsburg Thursday afternoon, was made out in the office of District Attorney John M Myers. The body of Mrs. Aaron was removed from the Reidsburg home to the Haskell undertaking parlors here Friday morning and prepared for burial. The remains were taken to Kittanning Saturday where interment was made on Sunday. Edward Aaron was arraigned before a justice of the peace here Saturday and upon advice of his attorney, entered a plea of not guilty.
