Benjamin was the son of Wilhemina Smalls of Charleston South Carolina and he entered service (Selected Service) in the US Army. With orders for duty in Vietnam he arrived on November 15, 1968 where he was assigned to and served with B Company, 4th Battalion, 23d Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, USARV.

ON March 15 during an engagement with hostile forces CPL Smalls was wounded in action in Tay Ninh Province. Evacuated to a Medical facility for treatment he died of is wounds shortly after arrival.
